This year, I opted for the Diagram category. I chose to keep it to the basics and to simply use a graphite pencil and paper to sketch my diagram ideas. I like to use the Sketchbook Project to keep me grounded with my drawing skills and to build on the foundation of doodling to pull ideas out of my psyche. My wolf in sheep's clothing sketch is a loose diagram of corporate sales. The map sketch is from my memory of a recent trip to the last printing day in Two Rivers, WI on December 31, 2012 at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. They are currently closed and relocating to a new location later this year.
After feverishly sketching, I am participating in the 2013 Sketchbook Project again this year. This project was an interesting start up from Steven Peterman & Shane Zucker. I had the opportunity to meet Steven last year in Atlanta, when I took a trip to view my sketchbook in their library-gallery collection. Steven tells me that he was actually a sculptor and going to school at SCAD when he and Shane had this idea to help inspire ideas among artists. The sketchbook project started out of their apartment and ended up permanently housed at the Brooklyn Art Library. To date, there are 23,750 sketchbooks in the collection, 66,369 participating artists, accumulating 855,000 of pages in the collection. The tours have been to over 7,841 cities, issuing 43,769 library cards with 84,518 checkouts and logging 49,980 miles. I love the cited numbers as we artists don't usually go mathematical, but this shows the impact one organization can have on inspiring artists and lovers of art.
